This eBook will help you think through who you are as an artist and what you want your art licensing business to look like. Learn to represent yourself with confidence and understand how to negotiate a win-win contract.
More than 30 contract terms are defined in detail - explaining why they might be in a contract and the implications to both parties. We include actual contract language and then explain "what it means to you" by breaking it down into everyday language. You will learn to dissect the leagalese and know how each word might affect your deal.
Using manufacturer contracts when you are just starting is fine but as you grow your business, there comes a time when it is better to be in the driver's seat and use your own standard contract. Maria discusses how and when to make the transition.

10 artists (& one who chose to remain anonymous) have shared their art licensing contract success stories and words of warning. They include (in the order they appear in the book) Khristian Howell • Marty Qatani • Jill Seale • Debbie Mumm • David Billings • Paul Brent • Drew Brophy • Gina Linn • Karen Embry • Kate McRostie
5 attorneys who work in the art licensing field also share their advice and insights in Part 8: Attorney Insights. They are Kyle-Beth Hilfer • Sarah Feingold • David Koehser • Rebecca Stroder • Tammy Browning-Smith

From the eDesks of Maria Brophy and Tara Reed
Dear Fellow Licensed Artist,
After doing a few Ask Calls together, we began talking about all the questions, concerns and fear artists have about contracts. Contracts are an aspect of art licensing that makes artists nervous and lack confidence. We decided to team up to write this book.
Our goal is to give you a thorough introduction to art licensing contracts – not just the nuts and bolts of them but also the reasons behind them. We want you to understand how your goals as an artist might affect the kind of contract you accept or decline and help you see the contract from both sides – yours and the manufacturers.
When you are done reading, we hope you breathe a sigh of relief and exclaim, “This isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be!” We don’t want contract terms to confuse you any longer. We want you to feel confident discussing the basics of a contract with a manufacturer. We want you to know when you should enlist the help of an attorney and when you might be ok on your own.
To make it even more useful, we reached out and got more perspectives. Throughout the book you will see informational boxes with Artist Anecdotes from artists who have experience in licensing. In Part 8 we have Insights from four attorneys who work in the industry on a variety of topics.
Learn from our mistakes and the advice of others in the industry. Don't be afraid of legal language any longer because you too can learn to read contracts like a pro.
Here's to your creative success!

"I've signed hundreds of licensing agreements over the last 10 years and was astonished at some very important clauses that aren't included in my contract or didn't take notice of in theirs that were covered in How to Understand Art Licensing Contracts."

I started licensing my art approximately two years ago and I'm accustomed to reading contract in the design world (web + print). Licensing is different and for the most part I understood them.
The recent contact from Russia wasn't to easy for me to get a handle on and while reading your book I got all the answers I needed. Sure, maybe I'll be contacting a lawyer at some point, but this $87 is one of the best investment into my business.

"I purchased your eBook ‘How to Understand Art Licensing Contracts’ about a week ago and I just wanted to write to you to say how incredibly helpful it’s been!!! I am a new-to-the-scene surface designer and I was putting off learning about the ins-and-outs of licensing and then the moment I’ve been waiting for happened, and I was offered my first art licensing contract!
I had attended one of Tara’s seminars on licensing at Surtex this past May and knew she knew her stuff so I bough the e-book, grabbed a cup of coffee and settled in to face my contract fears.
And thankfully the book was so well done and thorough that within a few hours I had all the information I needed and felt fully confident about the process. I took your advice, sent my revisions through to the licensee and they worked in my additions without protest!
I don’t know that I would have had the confidence to negotiate if I hadn’t read the book. The book was a life-saver! Thank you so much — it was worth every penny.
Thank you!"
